What is it about Darkness that Nicodemus benefited from - John 3

As I continue my journey through John 3, I am deeply moved by the various commentaries on the actions of Nicodemus—a ruler of the Jews who came to Jesus by night.

Why at night? Many have pondered this question.

  1. A matter of wisdom: Some commentaries suggest that visiting Jesus at night was a wise decision. As a respected ruler, Nicodemus may have wanted to keep a low profile and avoid drawing public attention.
  2. A matter of fear: Others believe fear motivated his timing. Nicodemus, like Joseph of Arimathea—another secret disciple—feared the Jews, who were known for persecuting followers of Jesus and opposing His ministry.
  3. A matter of safety: Their fear was understandable. The Jewish leaders of that time were active in suppressing the growing movement around Jesus.
  4. A matter of focus: Some interpretations propose that Nicodemus sought uninterrupted time with Jesus. The quiet of the night offered the perfect setting for a deep, meaningful conversation—one that shaped much of John 3.
  5. A matter of transformation: When it truly mattered, Nicodemus stepped out of the shadows. After encountering the truth Jesus revealed, he no longer hid.
  6. A matter of reflection: Are you still coming to Jesus under the cover of night? Fear not—He meets us even in darkness. In Exodus 20:21, God was present in the thick darkness on Mount Sinai. Psalm 18:11 reminds us that God made darkness His hiding place. He transcends both physical and spiritual darkness.

Nicodemus found in Jesus the answers his heart longed for. He recognized the divine authority behind Jesus’ miracles and sought deeper understanding: “We know you are from God; teach me what I need to know.”

  1. A matter of new life: Jesus revealed that Nicodemus did not need another teaching but a regenerated life—a divine rebirth. He spoke not of the Kingdom of Heaven, which refers to Christ’s future earthly reign, but of the Kingdom of God—eternal in scope, ruled by God over all, and open only to those who are born again (John 3:5).

God is in the Night ,you need not fear . Your encounter with Him births a regeneration rather than another knowledge bank - a produce of teachings .

May you encounter Him every where you turn to . Amen
